THE LATEST SPORT NEWS
Nottingham Forest signed Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla during the summer and the La Liga outfit are now growing concerned. The Reds took a chance on the World Cup winner but game time hasn’t been forthcoming – which isn’t impressing the club that owns him.
Montiel has joined the Reds on a season-long loan but has made just five appearances for Forest, totalling just 238 minutes. As a result, Sevilla are now worried that the 26-year-old won’t reach the required number of appearances that would trigger a £9 million mandatory fee.
Forest have been utilising other options on the right-hand side of their defensive unit this season. Serge Aurier has typically played there, with Ola Aina also proving a useful option to play in that position.
Sevilla growing concerned with Forest situation
The Spanish outfit need the money from this deal pretty desperately. Forest have agreed that after a certain number of appearances, the deal for Montiel will automatically become a permanent one.
According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, there are now growing concerns that Montiel will end up going back once his loan deal is up. A lack of minutes at the moment is making Sevilla anxious that they will have to try and sell the Forest man all over again.
The report claims that Montiel needs to play in half of Forest’s games this season. Montiel returned from the last international break injured and that has hampered his chances of holding down a regular place in the team.
It’s hard not to have some sympathy for Montiel during the opening months of his Forest career. He was on the cusp of getting a chance under Steve Cooper but then returned from Argentina duty with an injury.
The man who scored the winning penalty during the shootout in last year’s World Cup Final is clearly a useful player. However, the fact that he’s just recovering from an injury might mean he has to remain patient for a while longer.
Ultimately, Montiel is a useful player for Forest. With international breaks done and dusted until March when domestic football resumes next weekend, there is still enough to suggest that the defender will get a chance to hold down a place at some point.
