Former Cleveland Browns Quarterback Suddenly Retires To Take NFL Coaching Job

A former Cleveland Browns quarterback is quitting their NFL quarterback career to join the coaching ranks for the 2024 season. The league saw some staff turnover this week following the Super Bowl, but most coaching positions should be filled in the next week or so.

A former Cleveland Browns QB retires According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, former Browns quarterback David Blough has accepted the Washington Commanders assistant quarterbacks coach gig. Blough will work under Commanders’ offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

A couple notable assistants: Former NFL QB David Blough is the assistant QBs coach, while former #Steelers CB William Gay is the assistant DBs coach.

David Blough was a UDFA out of Purdue

 

The Browns signed Blough as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. The Purdue product was traded to the Detroit Lions in August of 2019. He would stay in Detroit through the 2021 season. Blough spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals before finishing his playing career with the Detroit Lions for the 2023 season.

Blough last played in a regular season for the Cardinals in 2022. He finished his career throwing for 1,435 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Blough will likely get to work with one of the league’s top prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, as the Commanders are set to have the second overall pick. There have been rumors that the Commanders will try to trade with the Chicago Bears for the first overall pick.
