Since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham back in 2020, the team has seen a tumultuous ride.
Since being acquired by the Hollywood pair, the Dragons have gained enormous media attention. They have starred in their own documentary, had a remarkable FA Cup run the previous season, and—most importantly—have returned to the Football League after a 15-year hiatus.
Three years have passed since their takeover was made public, and a lot of people are grateful that they helped the Welsh clubs out when they were in dire need.
While some wealthy celebrity owners have only ever invested in their football teams, it was immediately apparent that Reynolds and McElhenney cared more about the football team than anything else.
Having dropped out of the Football League in 2008, Wrexham spent the next 15 years languishing in non-league football, hoping for a return.
When the two took over the football team three years ago, they invested £2 million right away and pledged to support women’s football in the area.
After finishing second in the National League behind Stockport County during their first full season in control of the team, they were eliminated from the play-off semifinals in an exciting 4-5 match at Wembley against Grimsby Town, who were eventually promoted.
They did make it to the home of football that season when they participated in the FA Trophy, but they were defeated by Bromley at the last hurdle, which only seemed to fuel their desire for victory.
The previous season, Phil Parkinson’s team engaged in an exciting championship battle with Notts County, trading blows the whole way. However, Wrexham prevailed, defeating Boreham Wood in the season’s penultimate game to claim the title of National League champions.
Reynolds praised the supporters for an amazing three years on X today, acknowledging that becoming the club’s owner had “changed his life”.
