Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart has affirmed that he believes it’s the right moment to retire from professional football, despite suggestions from Sky Sports pundits to reconsider his decision.

The 37-year-old concluded his league career with Celtic in a 3-2 victory over St Mirren, marking the occasion by lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy alongside captain Scott McGregor. His final match is expected to be against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final next weekend.

Hart, who has played more in his three seasons at Celtic Park than in the previous five combined, expressed his desire to retire on a high note. He emphasized the significance of finishing his career strong, especially in such a special club as Celtic.

Having initially struggled to secure a starting spot in his career, Hart reflected on the opportunity he received at Celtic, which he couldn’t turn down. He believes that he’s reached a point where it’s time to step aside and allow someone else the opportunity to enjoy the game.

While physically he feels fine, Hart believes it’s the right moment to retire. He shared that he found it difficult to keep his retirement plans from the manager and his teammates, wanting to be transparent about his decision and to ensure he gave his best until the end.

Hart disclosed that he first informed goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods about his retirement plans following their win at St Mirren in the Scottish Cup in February. Telling his colleagues and the backroom staff at Celtic was emotionally challenging for him, marking the end of nearly two decades in professional football.

Reflecting on his career at Celtic, Hart expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for such a prestigious club and was moved by the support from the fans during his final appearance at Celtic Park.

Despite suggestions from some, including former Scotland striker James McFadden, that he could have extended his career, Hart is resolute in his decision to retire, feeling that now is the appropriate time to move on. He cherishes the memories and experiences he’s had throughout his career and looks forward to the next chapter of his life.
