Bills Linked to ‘Versatile’ Safety as Potential Micah Hyde Replacement
With safety Micah Hyde set to enter free agency, the Buffalo Bills are likely to lose a significant portion of their secondary. They may choose to replace Hyde with a versatile NFL Draft prospect.
The Bills spoke with safety Evan Williams of Oregon and Fresno State during the Senior Bowl, according to Katherine Fitzgerald of the Buffalo News. Fitzgerald mentioned that Williams’ versatility might be a good fit for the Bills and give him a chance to develop into Hyde’s ultimate replacement, even if Williams is predicted to be selected on the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Ducks’ Big Season Prior to concluding his undergraduate career with the Oregon Ducks, where he made waves with a stellar season in 2023, Star Williams played for Fresno State for four years. With 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 82 total tackles, the 6-foot-1 Williams was quite effective.
Fitzgerald was informed by Williams that he had a brief meeting with the coaching staff of the Bills.
“It’s quick. It’s a little 10-minute interview, and then you’re on to the next, but, yeah, just having that time to sit down and get a face-to-face in is really valuable,” Williams continued. “I felt like a good fit in Buffalo given his ability to play a range of positions,” Williams said. “As Fitzgerald noted, the Bills have placed a high value on defensive backs who can play across positions.”
Williams spoke with a couple of their scouts on Monday, when I first arrived, and so that was a good little conversation I got to have.
“Having the ability to cover the field as a single high safety when needed, or being able to go down in the box and make plays when needed,” Williams stated. “I believe that my versatility really works in my favour because it allows me to perform well in any situation.”
The Uncertain Future of Micah Hyde in Buffalo
After joining the organisation in 2017 and contributing to the team’s 17-year postseason drought being broken in his first season, Hyde has been a crucial component of Buffalo’s comeback. He and fellow safety Jordan Poyer joined together at the same time, creating an All-Pro team that contributed to the Bills’ defence becoming one of the best in the league.
Following the Bills’ divisional round elimination from the playoffs due to a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Hyde expressed uncertainty about his future plans and made hints that he might be thinking about retiring.
According to Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News, Hyde stated, “Every year when you lose, you wake up the next day and you’re filled with so much frustration because you weren’t able to get it done.” “Wow, that was a run,” I thought to myself as I woke up this morning. We had an incredible run throughout that time. I will always be appreciative to this crew for their dedication, perseverance, and hard work. I simply don’t know what the future will bring at this point. Maybe in a few weeks or so, I’m going to sit down and speak with the wife and the family. However, we’ll see. I’m not in any kind of rush.
