Tashreeq Matthews: Rangers linked to South African ex-Borussia Dortmund winger

Tashreeq Matthews is the latest name being linked with a move to Rangers – but the Ibrox club could face competition for the South African winger’s signature.

Reports are suggesting that Rangers and AZ Alkmaar are interested in a move for the 23-year-old, who currently turns out with Swedish Allsvenkan side IK Sirius.

Boasting an impressive return of 11 goals and 10 assists from the wing last season, the South African youth international is certainly a name that will turn Ibrox heads.

Rangers linked to Tashreeq Matthews

Rangers have been linked with a move for Tashreeq Matthews by a report coming out of South Africa, with Soccer Laduma naming both the Gers and AZ.

Interestingly, the report claims that South African giants Kaizer Chiefs are also interested in a move for the wide man.

The report claims “reliable sources” have told them it’s a three-horse race to sign the attacker, who appears to be contracted to the Swedish side until 2026.

Rangers fans will now be quickly searching up the obligatory YouTube videos as they look to see what Tashreeq Matthews is all about.

South African winger came through at Borussia Dortmund

Having started his career at Ajax Cape Town, the attacker spent time in the Borussia Dortmund youth set-up as a youngster.

Spending time out on loan in the Netherlands with Utrecht and Sweden with Helsingborgs during his time with the German giants, Matthews moved to Swedish side Varbergs in 2020.

Joining IK Sirius two years later, Tashreeq Matthews has certainly impressed at over his time there and this is one Rangers fans will be watching closely as Philippe Clement looks to strengthen his squad.

The Ibrox side haven’t been letting anything slip from the club’s recruitment department this January and it appears this is a link which has seeped through from the other side.

Rangers’ new Director of Recruitment Nils Koppen is tasked with finding top talent in more provincial leagues and Scandinavia is certainly a region which falls under his remit.

It comes with Rangers putting an increased emphasis on players who fit the club’s player trading model.
