Patrick Mahomes Shares Heartfelt Message For Eric Bieniemy

Former Kansas City Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy took shots at Eric Bieniemy this week when he said Bieniemy had “no real responsibility,” and thus no real part, in Kansas City’s offensive successful the past five years.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the newest player to come forward in Bieniemy’s defense.

“There should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bienemy is,” Mahomes tweeted on Thursday. “His leadership has a direct impact on the player/person I am today! 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time.. and I cannot wait for him to continue to prove doubters wrong!”

In Bieniemy’s five years as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Kansas City has ranked in the top five in offense and has hosted the AFC Championship every season, going on to win the Super Bowl twice.

In response to McCoy on Thursday, Bieniemy took the high road.

“LeSean McCoy is a future Hall of Famer,” he said. “He’s entitled to his own opinion. That’s life. You got good, you got bad. It doesn’t impact me in any way. One thing you learn when you’re in this position is you have to eliminate distractions. My job is to focus on the now. Everything that happens outside of these walls has no impact on Eric Bieniemy moving forward.”

Bieniemy was introduced as the new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Washington Commanders on Thursday. In Washington, Bieniemy will call the offensive plays, a new responsibility, as Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called the plays in Kansas City.

Many believe this new position, away from the wonders of Patrick Mahomes, could springboard Bieniemy into a head coaching vacancy in the future, although he said “being a head coach right now is not in my thought process” on Thursday.
