Phil Jagielka has called time on his career after 805 appearances

Former Everton captain Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from professional football aged 41.

The defender, who made over 800 appearances across a 23-year career in the Premier League and Football League, spent 12 years at Everton either side of spells at boyhood club Sheffield United.

During his time on Merseyside, which included 385 appearances – as well as international recognition, Jagielka was appointed club captain by David Moyes after the retirement of Phil Neville in 2013.

After returning to Bramall Lane in 2019, the veteran defender later enjoyed spells with Derby County and Stoke City.

Announcing the end of his stellar career in the game aged 41 on Tuesday, the 40-cap England international said: “All good things come to an end and after just over 800 appearances my playing career is done.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get to play football at the highest level for some amazing clubs as well as my country. It’s been an absolute honour to step onto the grass for every match and I have so many people to thank for that.

“Firstly I would like to thank every player, manager, coach, member of staff and fan who has played their part in my long football journey. I’ll be forever grateful for your support!

“Most importantly though I would like to thank my family and close friends who have stood by me throughout my career and shared in what has been something I’II never forget!”

Everton were one of the first to congratulate Jagielka on his career, replying to his announcement: “All the best in retirement, Jags. Thanks for giving your all every game in the royal blue jersey.”
