Injury report shows Lions’ banged-up backfield in worse shape than expected

Michigan’s ALLEN PARK — The top three running back choices on the depth chart are all included on Wednesday’s injury report, putting the depth at that position to the ultimate test this week. To protect the team’s injured roster, the Lions forwent a formal practice in favor of a walkthrough, so they could only estimate practice attendance. The good news is that Jahmyr Gibbs, a rookie running back who missed the previous two games due to a hamstring ailment, was anticipated as a restricted participant.

The team’s other two running backs, meanwhile, were unable to participate on Wednesday. That was anticipated with David Montgomery because coach Dan Campbell had previously stated that the lead back would be out for a while after breaking a rib cartilage in Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay. More alarming was the fact that Craig Reynolds, who had hamstring and toe injuries, was also listed as a non-participant. The team will probably have to look to its practice squad to help carry the load if Gibbs is not healthy enough to play in Sunday’s game in Baltimore and is not prepared for a full effort.

After re-signing undrafted rookie running back Mohamed Ibrahim earlier this week, the Lions have two running backs on that unit. He joins Devine Ozigbo, who saw three carries and caught a pass in the victory after being briefly elevated for last week’s game against Tampa. On Monday, Campbell said that the team might use one or more of their receivers to assist restock the backfield.

In addition to the running back problem, guard Jonah Jackson was also expected to stay out because he is still recovering from a sprained ankle that kept him out last week. Meanwhile, a number of players were labeled as questionable, including defensive back Brian Branch (ankle), tight end Sam LaPorta (calf), tight end James Mitchell (hamstring), center Frank Ragnow (toe), and defensive lineman Josh Paschal (knee). The majority of that small group is anticipated to be available this weekend when the Ravens visit. The biggest question mark is Paschal, who only just started practicing again last Friday after being placed on injured reserve for the previous four weeks.
