The Blue Jays pitcher will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Toronto Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The decision followed an examination by Dr. Keith Meister, who is scheduled to perform the surgery on June 17. Manager John Schneider mentioned that the exact nature of the procedure, whether a full Tommy John ligament replacement or an internal brace insertion, would be determined after Meister assessed the condition of Manoah’s ulnar collateral ligament.

“In this situation, you’re kind of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,” Schneider remarked. “After discussions with him and the training staff, we knew this was a possibility.” Manoah has been out since May 30 due to a sprained pitching elbow, with a record of 1-2 and a 3.70 ERA over five starts covering 24 1/3 innings.

With Manoah sidelined, Schneider stated it’s too early to decide how the Blue Jays will fill the gap in the rotation.

Right-hander Yariel Rodríguez is set to start for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, aiming to build his pitch count to around 70. If all goes well, he might recover from thoracic spine inflammation and rejoin Toronto’s rotation. This season, Rodríguez has posted a 1-2 record with a 4.11 ERA over four starts and 15 1/3 innings.

“We’ll see how things go after that,” Schneider said. “Ideally, you’d want something steady to keep everyone in the bullpen in order. … We’ll see how it unfolds, considering what’s best for all the guys in the bullpen, including Bowden Francis, and how to use him most effectively. So we’ll see after Tuesday and hope it goes well.”
