Cubs Reportedly Interested In Acquiring Blue Jays Superstar This Summer

The Chicago Cubs haven’t had as much success as they hoped so far this season but that doesn’t mean things can’t turn around.

Chicago currently is in third place in the National League Central with a 32-34 record. While this is the case, the Cubs currently are tied for a National League Wild Card spot. The National League is having a down year overall and the Cubs are firmly in the mix to land a playoff spot.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Blue Jays

The Cubs have talent throughout the roster, but there already has been speculation that the club could be looking to add some pop to the middle of the lineup.

One position that has been mentioned as one that could use an upgrade is first base. It’s uncertain exactly what the Cubs will do around the trade deadline, but they reportedly have discussed the possibility of acquiring Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. internally, according to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale.

“Rival executives believe that if the Toronto Blue Jays don’t turn it around, and are unable to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette to extensions, they will be open to moving them,” Nightengale said. “The Chicago Cubs have privately discussed the possibility of trying to acquire Guerrero at the trade deadline.”

Guerrero could be the perfect option for Chicago if he actually ends up being available. The three-time All-Star has been impressive this season for Toronto and has clubbed seven home runs, driven in 30 runs, and slashed .292/.383/.424 in 65 games played.

He is under team control until 2026 and Chicago could afford to give him a long-term deal as well. It’s unclear if he actually will be moved, but if Toronto is listening, Chicago should give the club a call.
