The Buffalo Bills have officially announced the signings of defensive tackles Austin Johnson and DeShawn Williams. These additions are expected to enhance the team’s depth significantly.

After a 2024 offseason filled with uncertainties about their defensive line, the Bills have taken steps to strengthen this unit. Veteran edge rusher Von Miller had a lackluster season, and many key players, including both edge rushers and interior linemen, became free agents. The team did rework Miller’s contract and re-signed tackle DaQuan Jones and defensive end A.J. Epenesa, both of whom performed well in 2023. However, bolstering the team’s depth remained a top priority for general manager Brandon Beane.

On Thursday, the Bills announced the signings of defensive tackles Austin Johnson and DeShawn Williams to one-year contracts.

Johnson, whose signing was initially shared by DaQuan Jones on March 23 via Twitter, struggled with the Los Angeles Chargers last season. However, he is expected to be a reliable option off the bench, particularly on rushing downs.

Williams is a smaller, pass-rush-focused lineman likely to serve as a backup to star defensive tackle Ed Oliver, who had a breakout season in 2023. Williams has spent much of his career on the roster bubble, including a stint with the Calgary Stampeders. After three seasons with the Denver Broncos, he recorded a sack and six quarterback hits with the Carolina Panthers in 2023. Williams is expected to bring more versatility to the line compared to Johnson.

These signings are part of a series of moves aimed at strengthening the Bills’ front seven, which also includes edge rusher Casey Toohill and linebacker Nicholas Morrow. Considering the struggles Buffalo faced throughout much of the 2023 season, it’s no surprise they are addressing their depth needs early, even if these moves are more economical.
