Manchester United is very saddened to announce the death of former defender Gordon McQueen.

Gordon, who was a great fan favorite for the club between 1978 and 1985, died at the age of 70 after being diagnosed with dementia.

He joined the Reds from Leeds United and was a member of our FA Cup-winning team in 1983, when we overcame Brighton & Hove Albion in a replay at Wembley Stadium.

When he left the club in 1985, he had made 229 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals from centre-half.

His coaching stint took him to Middlesbrough, where he worked alongside close friend and former Manchester United teammate Bryan Robson.

The flags are flying.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon McQueen, 70, who died at home in the early morning today, leaving behind his wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie, and his beloved grandchildren Rudi, Etta, and Ayla,” the McQueen family said in a statement.

“We hope that, in addition to many great football memories, he will be remembered for his character.” Our house was always full with friends, family, and football, just as it was in his final several months as dad fought so valiantly against dementia.

“The disease took him too soon, but he certainly lived life to the fullest, the ultimate entertainer, the absolute heart and soul of every occasion, the most fun dad anyone could wish for.”

“Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the wonderful staff at Herriot Hospice Homecare for their exceptional care, the utterly incredible Marie Curie team, who were there at the end with Gordon’s wife and daughters, and Head for Change for the emotional support and respite care.”

“Thank you also to our wonderful friends and family, who rallied around us during the worst of times and went above and beyond.” We are quite appreciative for this.”

Everyone at United wishes to express our heartfelt condolences to our former colleague Hayley and the rest of the McQueen family.
