West Ham United injury news as Konstantinos Mavropanos in line to make debut v Manchester City

West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos could be in line to make his London Stadium debut against Manchester City on Saturday 16 September, according to BBC Sport.

The UK news outlet (15 September) shares that the Greek international has recovered from a back injury and could feature for the first time for his new club on Saturday following his £17m move from Stuttgart [Sky Sports, 23 August].

Mavropanos only played only for Greece during the international break due to a back injury, but he scored twice in a 5-0 win over Gibraltar in their Euro 2024 qualifying match, earning him a spot on the Sofascore team of the week.

Buoyed

So far Hammers fans haven’t seen their new defender in action as he recovered from an injury, but it is safe to say he’s fit and ready to play his part should David Moyes call upon his services for the Hammers match against Manchester City.

The Greek international was superb against Gibraltar in midweek capping off a solid and assured performance in defence with two goals from headers.

With West Ham United being set-piece kings in the Premier League of late, the former Stuttgart and Arsenal man will certainly be in and amongst the goals in front of his new fans before long.

Facing up against Erling Haaland and the rest of Pep Guardiola’s side would be some baptism of fire for the 25-year-old, but he will be returning from international duty buoyed by his exploits for Greece in the last week.

Mavropanos may not start the game but it won’t be a surprise to Moyes to throw him on should the Hammers want to hold on to a lead and allow the 25-year-old to be the glue that holds everything together in that scenario.

Whether he features on Sunday or not, Moyes has certainly been given an added boost over his fitness, confidence and more crucially, the fact that he is a top defender in his own right.
