BBC Sport shares ‘daunting’ Rangers verdict as Neil Warnock news emerges

Neil Warnock faces a “daunting” meeting with Rangers in his first match as manager of Aberdeen, according to BBC Sport.

The publication reported on its website early on Monday (5 February) that his potential appointment may be “slightly puzzling” from the outside.

Shortly after, the Dons appointed Warnock as their new boss until the end of the season [official Aberdeen website, 5 February], with a trip to Ibrox up first on Tuesday (6 February).

“Warnock’s first task could be a daunting trip to Ibrox on Tuesday, but then comes a run of three home games, starting with Bonnyrigg Rose in the Scottish Cup, when we will start to discover who impressed in the ferocious training match,” according to BBC Sport.

“The logic behind the ‘Red Adair’ appointment may be slightly puzzling from the outside, but the outspoken Yorkshireman has proven in the past he has the tools to light up the current gloom at Pittodrie, even if he is just keeping the seat warm for someone else.”

Tough test at Rangers

A lot of Dons managers have come to Ibrox and failed, with Warnock not wanting to join them after being handed the job at Pittodrie. His arrival comes after Barry Robson was sacked last week after a year in the Aberdeen dugout.

The club are currently in eighth place in the Scottish Premiership table, and are really short in confidence amid their latest struggles. But, in mixed news for Rangers, Aberdeen did pick up an impressive point against Celtic on Saturday (3 February).

Philippe Clement and his players will be delighted that fierce rivals and league leaders Celtic dropped points at Pittodrie, but at the same time that positive result will provide the Dons with a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the trip to Ibrox.

But Rangers should still be too strong for their upcoming opponents, particularly on home soil, with Ibrox set to be in full voice for the clash under the lights.

The hosts will be full of confidence after defeating Livingston 3-0 on Saturday, with a win against the Dons by a three goal margin enough to send them top of the table.
