Former Everton winger Andros Townsend has joined Luton Town on a short-term deal, and Toffees youngster Jenson Metcalfe has already offered his support.

After being released by Goodison Park after missing the entire 2022/23 season owing to injury, the former England international agreed to terms with Kenilworth Road until January.

Given the lack of games the former Crystal Palace wide man has played in the previous couple of seasons, Townsend’s tenure on Merseyside is unlikely to live long in the memory of many Everton supporters, but his impact behind the scenes at Goodison Park may have gone slightly under the radar.

The 32-year-old made one appearance in the Premier League 2 last season, playing 45 minutes in the Toffees’ 2-0 loss to Leicester City in May as he stepped up his recovery from injury, and he would have set an important example by playing and training alongside some of the squad’s younger members.

Despite his recent problems, the winger has almost 400 professional matches to his name, with more than half of them coming in the Premier League, so he would have served as an outstanding role model to Metcalfe as he recovered.

On the pitch for Everton, Townsend was one of Everton’s better players during Rafa Benitez’s time in charge at Goodison, but Blues fans never really got to see the best of him as his cruciate ligament injury derailed his career in the final months of the season.

Metcalfe on the other hand is going from strength to strength for the Toffees’ youth sides, having picked up three goal involvements in the opening six matches of the Premier League 2 season as well as featuring in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Hopefully, he can continue to impress for the remainder of the season and push his way into first-team consideration in the next couple of years having signed a deal with the Toffees until 2026.
