The reigning premiers have revealed a ‘substantial offer’ was on the table to keep the World Cup player at the club, despite reports to the contrary.

Penrith Panthers superstar Stephen Crichton will depart the club at the end of the year in a bombshell move on the eve of the NRL season.

The two-time premiership player is off contract at the end of 2023 and informed the club of his decision to explore other opportunities over the weekend.

The 22-year-old played a crucial role in Penrith’s back-to-back premierships and also starred for Samoa at the Rugby League World Cup last year.

The Panthers insisted their offer was “substantial” and were left disappointed by Crichton’s decision to leave.“The club made a substantial offer in May 2022 for Stephen to remain at the Panthers and were disappointed the club could not reach an agreement at that point in time,” Penrith said in a statement.“Given the uncertainty surrounding the NRL salary cap and CBA negotiations, contract discussions were put on hold at the backend of the 2022 season, while the club worked to establish its position.”Panthers CEO Matt Cameron added: “Although the Panthers (are) disappointed by the outcome, the club respects Stephen’s decision, and understands the situation is exacerbated by salary cap pressure based on the club’s recent success.“The club thanks Stephen for his efforts and is looking forward to seeing him represent the Panthers for the remainder of the 2023 NRL season.

Crichton said it was “the hardest decision to make” but remains committed to the Panthers’ quest for a three-peat.

“It’s going to be tough to leave my teammates, but we will have our chance to make more memories this year. I know my friendships at Panthers won’t finish here but will last forever,” he said.
