“An exciting young talent” – Carlton Palmer reacts as Newcastle plot Southampton transfer move

The pundit has voiced his thoughts on a current conundrum at Southampton, with transfer interest mounting

Southampton had the customary ups and downs that come with having a big portion of their playing roster seek the exit door in the immediate wake of relegation.

Some of the club’s more high-profile departures included then-one-club man James Ward-Prowse, Tino Livramento, Romeo Lavia, Mohammed Salisu, and even Nathan Tella towards the end of the summer transfer window, the latter of whom had actually played in the Championship for Southampton on three occasions.

There was little surprise that all of those players ended up swapping second-tier football on the South Coast for a return to the top flight, while additional departures have resulted in a reconstruction for Southampton under Russell Martin.

On the other hand, they haven’t been afraid to flaunt their tremendous financial strength in compared to the majority of their newer divisional rivals, bringing in some big names for big money.

However, while it is still early days, Southampton may need to add to their list of January arrivals if their current situation persists.

Indeed, as of this writing, the Saints have done everything but pursue their promotion ambitions, suffering notable drubbings at the hands of Sunderland and Leicester City, culminating in the league’s worst defensive record and a lowly-15th-placed position.

But, for the time being, forget about new faces; they may be bidding farewell to yet another star.

Carlos Alcaraz is the latest Saints player to attract attention from the top, and he is thought to be on Newcastle United’s radar ahead of a potential move in the new year.

To the astonishment of supporters, he’s struggled so far under Martin, prompting a comment from EFL pundit Carlton Palmer, who has made no secret of his admiration for the Argentine midfielder and feels that certain elements could result in a move sooner rather than later.
