Southampton Set To Lose Forward Over The Coming Days

According to The Daily Mail, Southampton center-forward Paul Onuachu is closing close on a loan deal to Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor after only relocating to England eight months ago.

Midway through the 2022/23 season, the Saints were in a relegation race and spent big during the January transfer window in a last-ditch attempt to stay in the Premier League.

Onuachu was one of many players brought to St. Mary’s, having come for £18 million from Belgian giants Genk with an incredible goalscoring record. The 29-year-old scored 85 goals in 134 appearances for Genk, including 35 in 43 games during the 2020/21 season.

Unfortunately, it never quite connected with Southampton, as Onuachu has failed to score a single goal during his time with the Saints, and it now appears that Onuachu is on his way out the door, although temporarily.

This season, Onuachu has been left out of Russell Martin’s plans, with his single appearance coming in a 3-1 defeat to Gillingham in the EFL Cup first round.

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Southampton attempted to reach an agreement with Genk in which the Nigeria international would have returned to the Cegeka Arena and Joseph Paintsil would have moved to the South Coast. However, the transfer was never completed.

The transfer market in Turkey is still open until September 15th, giving Trabzonspor six days to secure an agreement with Southampton for the loan signing of Onuachu.

This is a wonderful move for Onuachu, but it does not benefit Southampton unless a buy-back clause is included in the loan agreement.

Onuachu is a fantastic number ‘9,’ but it hasn’t worked out for him in English football, therefore he should look elsewhere to get his career back on track.
