Rangers injury news as Rabbi Matondo suffers ‘bad one’ in win over Motherwell

Michael Beale has said that the injury Rabbi Matondo suffered in Rangers’ 1-0 win over Motherwell looks like “a bad one.”

The Light Blues made it three wins in three matches after the international break, but their performance on Sunday (24 September) was far from impressive, with the Ibrox crowd booing at the final whistle.

However, there was even more frustration for both Beale and the fans as Matondo was forced off with injury midway through the first half, having taken a knock to the outside of his knee and with Tom Lawrence, Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell already in the treatment room, the Welshman could be out for a while.

According to The National (24 September), Beale commented after the game, “It doesn’t look like a good one.” Today, Rabbi, we believe that is a horrible idea.

“He was hit on the outside of his knee. That’s all the knowledge I have.”

It does not seem good

Although a lot of Rangers’ performances so far this season have rightly earned criticism, it does feel as though Beale’s side have almost been cursed with injuries in the early stages of the campaign, especially in their attack.

Cantwell and Dowell have been out of action since the international break, Lawrence looked to have finally returned from his long-term injury last season and Danilo suffered a horror cheekbone injury after finally looking like he’d found his feet at Ibrox.

Matondo now appears to be out for an extended period of time, just as he was settling into Beale’s starting XI as a reliable starter, having started both the Europa League win over Real Betis and Sunday’s win over Motherwell.

Hopefully, the Welsh winger’s injury isn’t as serious as first thought, but if he took a big hit to the outside of his knee, it’s the kind of region where a player can sustain a lot of damage and thus miss out for a long period.

Beale can’t afford to have his attacking options restricted much more. If he’s going to lose more players to injury, he has to start getting some more out of the treatment room and back in action, sooner rather than later.
