The Michigan Wolverines community is heartbroken as we reflect on the life and So legacy of one of our greatest legends, Gerald Ford. Though he passed away in 2006, his impact on the University of Michigan and its football program remains as powerful as ever. Today, we remember him not just as a former President of the United States, but as a true Wolverine whose leadership, grit, and humility set the standard for generations to come.

 

Gerald Ford played center and linebacker for the Wolverines during the early 1930s, helping lead the team to two undefeated seasons and national championships in 1932 and 1933. Known for his toughness and team-first attitude, Ford famously turned down offers from the NFL to attend Yale Law School—showing that character and intellect could shine just as brightly as athletic ability.

More than a football player, Ford embodied what it meant to be a Michigan Man. His legacy transcended the field and politics, rooted in integrity, discipline, and an unshakable sense of service. Even as President, he never forgot his days in the maize and blue, and often spoke fondly of his time in Ann Arbor.
