Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam has been slapped with an $850 fine and had his license suspended for six months after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Brisbane’s inner west on 18 October. Mam faced court on Monday and pleaded guilty to driving while relevant drug is present in blood.

The 21-year-old was also driving without a licence. And the Broncos five-eighth was charged after driving a Ford Ranger that stuck a Toyota Camry travelling in the opposite direction in Bardon.

The young NRL playmaker underwent a roadside drug test at the time and returned a positive result. A secondary test later was also positive. And on Monday the 21-year-old copped an $850 fine and had his licence suspended for six months. The Broncos player did not have a conviction recorded, but the magistrate blasted Mam for his actions on 18 October.

“Having made that stupid decision to get behind the wheel of the car, and using illicit substances as well … a cocktail of cocaine and other matters that were found in your blood on this particular occasion,” the magistrate said. “At so many levels you are fortunate to stand where you are today given you were involved in a two vehicle motor accident. You could’ve been injured or killed or the other parties could’ve been injured or killed.”

Mam spoke to reporters outside of court and claimed he was sorry for the incident. He also felt he let down fans having been a role model to so many during his rise as a star of the Broncos team. “Today is a very important step in learning from my actions and starting to make things right.

“To the people involved in the accident I am truly sorry. This incident isn’t a reflection of what I want to be and what is expected of me as a role model. To the NRL, Brisbane Broncos, the fans, my family – I am sorry. I promise to work on being a better person.”

The saga isn’t over for Mam in regards to his NRL career. The 21-year-old is expected to face a lengthy ban from the NRL after the incident. The Broncos have stood behind their player throughout the ordeal with new coach Michael Maguire addressing the drama on Monday morning.

Speaking ahead of his sentencing on Monday, Maguire told Channel Nine’s Today Show the young playmaker is working hard to make changes to his day-to-day life. “I’ve obviously had a number of conversations with him, and Ezra’s working through the process of going through what he has to,” new Broncos coach Maguire said.

“I think he’s learnt a lot from this moment in time. He’s a young man that’s made a mistake, and he’s working hard to make sure that he moves forward now in the right path.” Maguire put the ball in Mam’s court on whether he can be fit for the start of the season when he is ready to come back.

Mam is technically free to train with the Broncos because the charges don’t trigger the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy. But the Broncos are said to be wary of rushing Mam straight back into the spotlight and will give him until the new year before getting him to training.
