The sport of Formula One is fast-paced and high-stakes. Racing is risky, as Formula One cars frequently reach speeds over 200 mph.
The drivers are at risk of a serious collision if something goes wrong at those speeds. The top 12 crashes that Formula 1 has experienced in the past ten years are shown here.
F1, security, and deadly collisions Since Formula One’s inception in the 1950s, the sport’s safety record has significantly improved. Tragic accidents were regrettably frequent in those days. The number of drivers murdered each season was not unusual.
Fortunately, since then, there have been significant improvements in safety regulations for the cars, the circuits themselves, and the protective gear used by drivers. As a result, there are now almost no fatal collisions.
Jules Bianchi tragically passed away in Suzuka in 2015, making him the last Formula 1 racer to be murdered. The HALO, one of the most significant safety improvements in Formula One over the past two decades, was largely influenced by that one event.
The previous F1 death prior to Bianchi was Ayrton Senna in 1994. Unquestionably, that was the most well-publicized loss in the sport’s history, and it led to several safety advancements. Two fatal accidents occurred during the 1982 season prior to 1994, one of which tragically featured the renowned Canadian Formula One racer Gilles Villeneuve.
