A number of London sides could battle it out off the pitch…
Tottenham Hotspur had appeared to be a transformed side under Ange Postecoglou, even following the loss of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. The days of the Lilywhites failing to find an attacking spark appear to be over, and the days of true attacking purpose appear to have come, with the Lilywhites scoring plenty of goals during the current Premier League campaign.
When January arrives, they could add to what is already an exciting frontline, with reports claiming that they could make a surprise bid for one particular Arsenal target, who could be the final piece to Postecoglou’s attacking puzzle in North London.
Spurs spent a staggering €249 million (£217 million) on reinforcements during the summer transfer window, using the Kane money wisely to ensure a strong start to their Premier League campaign. Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, and Micky van de Ven were among those that went through the door to assist Postecoglou in his rebuilding of the club.
Spurs may now shift their attention to making further improvements, which might include a January surprise move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele. According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and West Ham United are all keeping an eye on the Frenchman, who has yet to score or assist since joining PSG for a reputed £50 million this summer.
Given that he has just recently relocated to Paris, it would be surprising if Dembele, who earns £335,000 a week, left in January. However, his poor start could easily develop into a forgettable spell, potentially leading in a move away. When the winter transfer market opens, it will be intriguing to watch if Spurs and others continue to pursue Dembele.
Dembele never lived up to the hype at Barcelona, scoring just 40 goals and suffering with fitness after a projected £135.5 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2017. So far, PSG has had a similar story, with zero goal involvements in five games before to the weekend’s fixtures, signifying a poor start.
On paper, an attacking duo of Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele should be lighting up the world, but that hasn’t been the case, as the Ligue 1 winners haven’t had the ideal start to the season in France’s top flight.
Luis Enrique will be eager to see his team progress, and Dembele may be at the heart of it if he finds his feet. Despite his poor form, Enrique recently welcomed the summer arrival, telling The Mirror:
“If I were a supporter of a team, I would pay to see Ousmane Dembele. He’s a totally different player. He is unpredictable, overflows, [and] works magic.
“It’s true that he may have missed things and didn’t score his first goal, but the day that happens, I’m sure he’ll score a lot later. This happens to all attackers. It’s wonderful for a coach to have a player of this quality and level available.”
