Phil Collins Earns Another No. 1 Hit In America–As A Songwriter…Phil Collins Earns Another No. 1 Hit In America–As A Songwriter

Phil Collins hasn’t released new music in several years, but that hasn’t stopped the legendary musician from scoring a new hit in America.

This week, the pop-rocker reaches the No. 1 spot on a Billboard chart, but not as an artist. Instead, he collects a winner as a songwriter thanks to a clever interpolation.

Kane Brown hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart this week, the tally that ranks the most popular tracks at country radio in the U.S.

His tune “I Can Feel It” lifts from No. 4 to the highest rung, giving Brown–and his credited songwriters–another major win.

“I Can Feel It” interpolates Collins’ smash “In the Air Tonight,” and that usage has likely been a factor in the song becoming so popular among a country-loving audience.

Collins wrote his single on his own, and Brown credits him as a songwriter on his latest success (which is common practice when sampling or interpolating an older cut), so both artists–along with fellow songwriters Gabe Foust and Jaxson Free–claim a new No. 1.

Brown scores his eleventh No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart this week. The track is also one of his dozen top 10s on the ranking.

Brown released “I Can Feel It” last September. It has taken its time climbing the summit on the Country Airplay chart, which is known as one of the most competitive radio rankings published by Billboard.

The tune serves as the lead single from his forthcoming album.Impressively, all but one of the country star’s top 10 hits have managed at least a single turn atop the tally.

“I Can Feel It” marks Collins’ first No. 1 on one of Billboard’s radio charts in more than 20 years. According to the music magazine itself, the rocker last led one of the many radio-focused rankings in 2002.

That year, his single “Can’t Stop Loving You” rose to the highest rung on the Adult Contemporary tally.
